People’s Prayers have been heard and the First shiny Pokemon has appeared in Pokemon Go, thanks to the Water Even Niantic have added the first shiny Magikarp. This has got many Players wild looking for a shiny since it’s a tradition from the handheld Games. Pokemon Go: Shiny Magikarp/Gyarados Water Festival
Shiny Magikarp/Gyarados Water Festival
Q: My Magikarp has white whiskers! Is it shiny?
A: No, it’s female. Shiny Pokémon are noticeably different in color, and have a little sparkle/shimmer effect as well
Q: Okay fine, what does a Shiny Magikarp look like?
A: It’s pretty much pure gold/light orange. I’m mostly colorblind but I can still see it’s a very stark difference.
Q: Does it evolve into shiny Gyarados?
A: Yes it does. shiny Gyarados is red and you will definitely know if you have one.
Q: What are the odds of finding a shiny Magikarp?
A: This is unclear, as data is still being collected. In the original games, the odds of finding a shiny Pokémon was 1 in 8192. Through a lot of trickery, the best it ever got in the handhelds was 1 in 1365. However, that was for any shiny encounter, not for a specific Pokémon. Since Magikarp is the only shiny Pokémon in the wild so far, the numbers are probably different. Right now there are more Magikarp spawning than other types because of this event. There are many being shared online, but keep in mind this is a game with tens, hundreds of millions of players, so that doesn’t mean they’re common. Still, my guess would be that it’s not a 1 in 8192 chance, and is probably much, much lower.
Q: If I get a shiny Magikarp that spawns, will my friend get one too?
A: No. Somehow Niantic has managed to make shiny spawns individualized, which I assume is meant to prevent spoofers from vacuuming up shiny nests worldwide.
Q: Can I find a shiny Gyarados in the wild?
A: I have not seen anyone post one yet. If this is possible, it’s so rare that millions of people haven’t even seen one yet.
Q: Can a shiny Magikarp still turn into a Ditto?
A: Yes, unfortunately. And no, the Ditto is not shiny.
Q: What if I accidentally transfer my shiny?
A: You would really have to go out of your way to do so. Shiny Pokémon cannot be selected in the mass transfer screen. Also, even if you don’t have it favorited, shiny Pokémon have a warning that pops up when you’re about to transfer it. Niantic has thought this aspect through.
Q: Will shiny Magikarp still exist after the Water Festival event is over?
A: Niantic has not made this clear one way or the other, but my guess would be yes. This isn’t Pikachu with a party hat. Shinies are a significant part of Pokémon, and I would imagine this will be more like Ditto, where the chance is always there to get one after the initial release. There will, however, be less Magikarp everywhere than what you’re seeing now, so make sure you take advantage of this event.
Q: Are there any tricks to finding a shiny Magikarp?
A: Right now the community is testing a bunch of methods, but nothing is conclusive yet. Chances are it is simply a low percentage spawn. I’m not sure why it would actually need to be more complicated than that.
Q: Will Pokémon GO Plus give me any sort of special indication to let me know it’s encountered a shiny?
A: No, that seems to be beyond its extremely limited technical capabilities.
Q: Will other people be able to see my shiny in a gym?
A: Yes, both you and other people will see that it’s shiny.
Q: Do shiny Pokémon have perfect IVs?
A: No, but that would have been cool and I think that’s a missed opportunity to be honest.
Q: Can I get shiny Magikarp from incense or eggs?
A: Incense, apparently yes, but eggs, no, because Magikarp no longer hatch from eggs for whatever reason.
Q: Will a shiny show up in my journal?
A: Yes, you can see the coloring there.
Q: Are there any other shiny Pokémon in the game besides these two?
A: No, not yet. My guess is that more shinies will be rolled out in time. I do not believe that Niantic will dump 250 shiny variants in one go, as I’m guessing that shinies will be made part of future events like we’re seeing now, and may show up in small groups at best.
